sock pentathlon

A day before the announcement of the needed material for the first round I want to write about this.
It oficially starts on March 1. and we are supposed to post our finished socks in the yahoo group
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/skp2008

I guess you can still sign up if you like, and be in the fun.

It will take place the year over and every 2 months there will be a new challenge, so at the end each participant hopefully has 5 pairs of fun new socks and (s)he does not have to send them away, they are all theirs.

The patterns will be medium in the complexity level, but maybe introducing new techniques or styles.

All in all it sounds doable and might help me to focus on one project at a time, so I can lose some of my scatteredness and finally have some 'me' knitting after all those last projects for others :-)

pictures and memories from the past

Siri 3 months old

It is a century ago, so to say, and almost a decade. Unbelievable how time passes by. It feels like it was yesterday that I drove to Frankfurt airport to pick the two of mine and another cat up to move into new homes in Mannheim, and still so much has happened, I have moved two/three times with them already, and they were good with that, no fuzz, no protest peeing, and getting used to the new homes right away.

She looks like a mix of bat, rat and sphinx I think, and I was kind of shocked when she first came out of the transport bag, so skinny and small, but she grew into her ears just fine :-) and her tail has lost all 'rattyness'.

The black crud in her ear was from the mites she had besides all other things a street cat can get in contact with.
So we had a hard time getting rid of those unwanted guests in the beginning, but ever since never again we had such problems. She is a champ getting medications administered, and her pill every second day is no problem at all. It is like : 'open cat, insert pill, let go' most of the days.
Dali is a little diva, concerning this, and we had a hard time with her, not wanting to be touched or even held, it was almost impossible to give her the ear-drops and worming paste or other meds.

We had our 8 year anniversary on Dec. 4. and I can still not believe how long in the past that is already (hope for another 10 years at least before we have to part, but never know with Siris autoimmune problems if she will be an old crone cat some day).

Dali is just not very photogenic, being the black whirlwind she is, so you cant see her on many pictures, I love them both with all their quirks and dont want to miss them, they have changed my life and are the reason for not giving up even though it sometimes feels like it.

Both of them loved to scootch in and out of this and it entertained them and me a whole afternoon.
Of course, today none of them would fit in there any more. Siri is about 9 weeks old on the picture, and she has neither been tattooed nor has she had her diagnosis of eosinophile syndrome back then.
She just had found out her new home was friendly and warmed up to the humans sharing the apartment with her (mom, sister 1 and her boyfriend, me).
This was December 1999 and we are still happyly living together and I hope it will be for a long time.

cowl for Ailis

I designed the kitty paw prints and knit up this cowl for a friend. She paid for the yarn and I gave her my creativity and time to make it :-)

I put in a short row 'heel' for the back of the head so in front the fabric does not form too much of a bulk.

It is knit on 8 mm needles and used three 50 gram balls of the orange yarn and a little ammount for the eyelash yarn around the ends.

It is so cozy I would have loved to keep it to myself, but it was promised, so I was a nice girl and gavbe it to her today in sunday service.

She loved it and kept it on the whole time.

I am glad that it came over so well and now I just need to let her know how to care for it.

Ein Stoeckchen

Dieses Stoeckchen habe ich hier gefunden
http://knittaxa.twoday.net/stories/3806623/
I found this 'stick' and would like to answer as good as possible

1. When did you get your diploma in opening doors and cans?
I was around 3 when the first cat snuck into our lives, and ever since I tried to convince my parernts that we need a cat around.
There were some years we did not give home to a cat, but in 1999 I got the decision down to have a go at 'my own cats', I was sure to adopt two since I had horific working hours and I wanted them to have company while I was away.
Some cat piccies are in the posts of the past, and there will be more in the future :-)

2. How often do you think you get up to open a door for your furry nose?
uncountable times, but always limited to doors in the apartment because my furry noses are indoor cats (one needs medication each day, and the other one does not want to go out even if the apartment door is wide open).

3. was war das peinlichste, was du jemals deiner katze zuliebe getan hast? wer weiß davon?

3. what was the most embarassing thing you ever did for your cat? and who knows about it?
While shopping for catfood, I must have misplaced my car keys somewhere in the store. I looked everywhere, even asked the clerk to help looking for it, we even looked under the shelves and found huge dustbunnies, but my key with the little stuffed black sheep was gone. It has never again surfaced, and bf had to drive over 30 km to bring the replacement key, so I could get the car back home.
The sales clerk, bf an the complete list of blog readers (2-3 people) know about it.

4. how much time do you spend in the supermarket to buy cat-food?
Since there is only one kind of diet food, not much time, both the kitties like it even though only one of them needs it :-)

5. how much effort do you put into the food? do you cook meals for teh cat? Do you switch brands and tastes?
In the beginning of our time together they made a big hubub when I cooked rice, and they always got a little bowl of it. At some point they were not interested in such things any more, they wanted their diet food and nothing else, even snacks were refused. If I open a can of tuna, they come running and get the water in which it is stored and gobble it down fast (not very often though, maybe 4 times a year, so no lead poisoning or such possible).

6. does your cat sleep in the bed? in case yes: how much room remains for you? are you allowed to move?
In the past, when we lived in a one room apartment, they were in the bed with me and it was no problem to move. One of them would sleep on my side, the other one was always at the foot end of the bed. When I first got into bed, they would sit on me, but move to their night places eventually.
Siri used to wake me at 5 am placing her front paw on my cheek and extending the claws slowly onto my skin (no puncture, just a little poking).
Now they are not allowed in the bedroom (bf likes to sleep cat-hair-free), but in their own room they have a bed they can use whenever they feel like it.

7. what was the worst/yuckiest thing, your cat has brought you (proud as can be)?
Siri managed to soak a playmouse in the waterbowl once (one of her nicknames is racoon). This mouse desintegrated into a piece of soppy fur, a mass of paper machee and a little bell, the soppy paper machee she fished out and brought it to me with the noises a mother cat makes when she brings prey to her littles.

8. You are in love with a wonderful person. He says:"the cats or me". Who is leaving?
the one who did not spend as much time with me than the others :-)

9. kaufst du deiner katze spielzeug? wo und was?

9. do you buy toys for your cat? where and what?
Yes, at the pet store (furmousies, once a year), yarn store (leftover yarn will be knitted up and felted for toys, strings are a good toy if a human is attached), farmer/shepherd (wool from sheep is good to roll in, lick it, smell and sniff it, snooze in it), Amazon (the packaging is a good tent to sleep and play under) Postal stuff (boxes are so much better than the Amazon stuff), Supermarket ( the bags are shredded to stripes and sewed between fabric, and make a good crinkly tunnel, toiletpaper rolls are good to bat at and chew on, aluminum foil balls are fun and fly if batted at, strings from packaging and feathers are good objects to chase after), Home makers store (wooden pieces on the wall to climb on, sisal rope to sharpen claws on, padding to snooze on) ...

1

10. do you still notice cat hair on your clothes?
sometimes, if I get my attention to it deliberately, with the feel good clothes to hang around at home it doesnt matter anyways :-)

whoever reads it and would like to answer it, I would like to see a comment and read about it :-)
I dont throw this into any direction, it just sits here and waits to be taken :-)

summer evening skies in a center pull ball

Here the promisd picture of how the 'lazy dyed' ball of yarn looks rewound into the center pull ball I usually knit my socks from.
I am still not sure if this will become a sock or a glove or mitten.
It has some time marinating now, since I still have to finish some other projects.

I finally managed to finish the cowl type headcover for Ailis, and it is on the rack blocking now and I hope I can meet up with her to give it to her so she can have some use of it this cold period.

It is really slow here, me still trying to figure out what makes me feel so out of it emotionwise. Had the third consecutive night where I woke with terror, and it sure mixes up the days, and I am constantly tired and craving for chocolate or other comfort food.

Being on the waiting for therapy does not make it better, each and every day I dread looking into the mailbox, since I am sure they will deny (of course ther is no real reason why, and I am just fretting about it) my therapy. People telling me I am not worth it, and doubts of my existence are my daily company, and my rational part cant get through to the emotions and out of the past feelings, so I am stuck in this dark place and dont like it a bit.

summer evening skies

this is how it looks if I am too lazy to skein up the balls of yarn before dyeing.

I toss it into a soak with some shampoo so the appreture goes out the fiber and it is wetted down thoroughly, I rinse it in the same temperature water and squeeze as dry as possible.
It is still damp then, but not dripping wet any more, since it is supposed to soak up the dye in the water I will dipe it into.
So if you have an old salad twister, or however this thing is called, you can take out water by using centrifugal forces and then it lands in the dye-bath.

For this one I had some orange left, some violet (the red from this mix had exhausted to the original yarn i was dyeing) which turned out rather darkish blue, so I put the blue side into the red that was leftover, too, and it made a nice variegated violet with more or less red and blue parts.
This always is a random process, but so far all yarns knitted up in a nice variegated way, so I hope this one does, too.
Next post will be about how this looks wound into a center pull ball on my makeshift nostepinde (a pen of unknown origin) .
