In Bremen there was a conference concerning Autism. The intention was that researchers and people dealing with Autism in the one or other way can meet and learn from each other.
One of the workshops was lead by Dr. Brita Schirmer (Berlin) and the participants were the people to be seen on the picture. All either have Aspergers Syndrome ore are High functioning Autistic.
Some have received their diagnosis rather early, and some just recently. The questions to be answered were concerning how therapy can look like to be helpful for autistic people and how the experiences concerning therapy were. There were the most different experiences, but all in all the group was having the same feelings about asking for more acceptance, and openness, and maybe some form of community for the more severe afflicted, so they can live as independent as possible and still have the contacts they need for help.
It was a very intense time, but all went very disciplined and the audience was following through with the 'behaviour pleas' we had issued before. No coming and going, no chatter or mobile ringing, no loud handclapping at the end, but the applause known in the hearing impaired community (raising the hands and shaking them).
I was amazed at how good it went, and that we were able to cover all questions.
I think all had a good experience there, and I also hope the many therapists in the audience could take some helpful info with them and will be able to apply them in their work with autistics.
